From Manchester to the Mekong - Tom Rushworth joins Burge Hughes Walsh

We welcomed our latest recruit; Tom Rushworth in October 2016 to our team of Consultant/Trainers. Tom brings with him a wide range of experience with a variety of different businesses over more than thirty years.

A graduate Mechanical Engineer, Tom has experience in various Engineering Project Management roles, followed by more than twenty years of experience in Sales and Commercial positions. Initially selling capital equipment (Industrial Food Refrigeration Systems) in the UK and South East Asia before moving to a new career as a Key Account Manager in the in the FMCG world, supplying metal packaging to famous brands such as; Ronseal and HG Heinz and other leading paint and food manufacturers in Europe.

His experience in these customer facing roles has given him a fascinating insight in to the operations of many seemingly very different and diverse industries from paint manufacturers in Manchester to shrimp farmers in the Mekong Delta.

However as Tom notes “….the one thing that all customers have in common is a want or need with an expectation that a good supplier will at least meet if not exceed their expectations. Which is why I love working for Burge Hughes Walsh because we never assume we already know what our customers need, rather we work with them first to help them identify fundamentally what they are trying to achieve i.e. their Operational or Project Requirements. We then introduce them to and train them in, the use of a range of powerful methodologies and tool-sets such as System Thinking and Systems Engineering that empower them to systematically design any product or service to deliver that requirement, right first time.

Of course it takes good people with the right mind-set to get the best out of any system or process and here too Tom is a passionate advocate for applying a systems approach; “After all if you consider one individual to be a single component in a group of people (or sub-system), within an organisation that may comprise many sub-systems, it makes sense to help each person (component) to maximise their own performance. The resulting increase in the collective group/company performance is always greater than the sum of the component parts and yet it amazes me how many organisations still don’t recognise the value in good quality personal development training.

In addition to his experience in Engineering and Sales Tom also brings to Burge Hughes Walsh experience in running his own business delivering just such cognitive performance development training programmes to a wide variety of businesses including Burge Hughes Walsh before joining us full time.
